Southern’s season reads like a team that has had to survive a brutal nonconference gauntlet and now lives or dies by its league results. Trips to the major programs in Arkansas, Marquette, Texas, Baylor and Illinois produced harsher losses that left little signature quality, while a gritty road victory at Northwestern LA and a home win over their city rival showed they can win away from home and against familiar regional foes. The best moments are against those accessible opponents and the competitive outing at Washington, the worst moments are the lopsided defeats at power conference sites that a committee will remember, and the remainder of the schedule is loaded with winnable conference dates at Alcorn State and Jackson State and home chances against Alabama A&M and Alabama State that can repair the resume.
