Projection: need to automatically qualify

Southern’s résumé reads like a brutal nonconference gauntlet that produced one meaningful road win but also several results that undercut its case. The victory at Northwestern Louisiana and a competitive outing at Washington prove the team can handle hostile environments, yet heavy losses at Arkansas and Texas and setbacks at Marquette and Cal Baptist have erased much of that goodwill. The remaining nonconference road dates at Baylor and Illinois are the only realistic chances to land a résumé-changing scalp while the rest of the schedule is dominated by familiar SWAC foes such as Prairie View, Texas Southern, Grambling and Alcorn State whose outcomes will mostly confirm league standing rather than move the needle. That mixture of tough scheduling, damaging defeats against power programs, and a scarcity of quality wins explains why their position looks the way it does.
